What is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder?
ADHD is a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with your child's functioning or development.
Hyperactive/ impulsive symptoms include but are not limited to:
Inattentive symptoms include but are not limited to:
Symptoms must be present for at least 6 months and prior to age 12. They must also directly impact the child’s social and academic activities.
If you are concerned about your child and feel that they have some of these symptoms it will be beneficial to pursue a neuropsychological evaluation.
Hyperactive/ impulsive symptoms include but are not limited to:
- Difficulty following daily routines (ex: bedtime/morning routines)
- Fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in chair
- Has difficulty remaining seated
- Runs about or climbs excessively in children; extreme restlessness in adults
- Difficulty engaging in activities quietly
- Acts as if driven by a motor
- Talks excessively
- Blurts out answers before questions have been completed
- Impulsively touches others
- Difficulty waiting or taking turns
- Interrupts or intrudes upon others
- Self-directed- Difficulties with transitions to a nonpreferred activity
Inattentive symptoms include but are not limited to:
- Fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes
- Has difficulty sustaining attention
- Does not appear to listen
- Struggles to follow through on instructions
- Has difficulty with organization
- Avoids or dislikes tasks requiring a lot of thinking
- Loses things
- Is easily distracted
- Is forgetful in daily activities
Symptoms must be present for at least 6 months and prior to age 12. They must also directly impact the child’s social and academic activities.
